La \u201cSala della battaglia del Trasimeno\u201d, camera di Ascanio II, situata sempre all\u2019interno del Palazzo della Corgna \u00e8 caratterizzata dalla scena della battaglia del Trasimeno dipinta nel riquadro centrale<\/strong><\/p>\n

La battaglia del Trasimeno \u00e8 stato uno degli scontri bellici maggiori della seconda guerra punica, e fu combattuta il mattino del 21 giugno 217 avanti Cristo presso le sponde nord-occidentali del lago Trasimeno tra l’esercito romano, guidato dal console Gaio Flaminio Nepote, e quello cartaginese, al cui comando era Annibale Barca.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Annibale voleva decimare le due legioni guidate da Flaminio, che lo stavano seguendo lungo la sua marcia in Etruria, prima che si ricongiungessero con quelle dell’altro console Gneo Servilio Gemino. Scendendo la Val di Chiana in direzione di Roma, il condottiero cartaginese fece accelerare il passo alle sue truppe e giunse con alcune ore di anticipo in prossimit\u00e0 del lago Trasimeno: decise quindi di deviare verso est il suo percorso, in direzione di Perugia, poich\u00e9 aveva individuato, in una valle compresa tra le estreme pendici dei monti di Cortona e il lago, i luoghi adatti per tendere un’imboscata alle legioni romane. Annibale qui si accamp\u00f2 con la fanteria pesante su una collina e dispose gli altri reparti sulle pendici dei colli circostanti, nascosti in modo da sorprendere ai fianchi l’esercito romano e circondarlo.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Il console romano arriv\u00f2 presso le rive del lago quando il sole stava per tramontare e fu costretto ad accamparsi e ad attendere il giorno seguente per riprendere l’inseguimento, ignaro che l’accampamento nemico si trovasse l\u00ec vicino, essendo separati solo dai bassi colli di Cortona che si protendono verso il lago.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Il giorno seguente, i reparti di Annibale erano gi\u00e0 pronti all’agguato quando i Romani, all’alba, incominciarono a lasciare l’accampamento e, superato uno stretto passaggio tra uno sprone roccioso e le acque del lago, entrarono nella valle immersa nella nebbia, ignari del pericolo incombente, non avendo inviato esploratori in avanscoperta. <\/strong><\/p>\n

L’esercito cartaginese consegu\u00ec sul campo una vittoria piena, avendo colto la maggior parte delle truppe romane ancora in ordine di marcia nel fondo della valle. <\/strong><\/p>\n

Attorno ad essa quattro episodi di guerra. L\u2019esercito in marcia, lo sbarco della flotta, una scena di battaglia e la clemenza del generale. Il celebre scontro tra le truppe di Annibale e l\u2019esercito romano guidato dal console Gaio Flaminio, ebbe luogo nei pressi dell\u2019attuale Tuoro sul Trasimeno, nel 217 avanti Cristo. Colto di sorpresa l\u2019esercito romano fu travolto e nello scontro persero la vita circa 15.000 soldati.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The ‘<\/strong>Hall of the Battle of Trasimeno<\/strong>‘, the chamber of Ascanio II, located within the Palazzo della Corgna, is characterized by the scene of the Battle of Trasimene painted in the central panel.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Battle of Trasimene was one of the major military engagements of the Second Punic War, fought on the morning of June 21, 217 BC, near the northwestern shores of Lake Trasimene between the Roman army, led by Consul Gaius Flaminius Nepos, and the Carthaginian forces under the command of Hannibal Barca.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Hannibal sought to decimate the two legions led by Flaminius, who had been following him along his march in Etruria, before they could join forces with those of the other consul, Gnaeus Servilius Geminus. Descending the Val di Chiana towards Rome, the Carthaginian commander quickened the pace of his troops and arrived several hours ahead of time near Lake Trasimene. He then decided to alter his course eastward, towards Perugia, as he had identified a valley between the extreme slopes of the Cortona mountains and the lake as an ideal location to ambush the Roman legions. Hannibal camped here with his heavy infantry on a hill and positioned the other units on the surrounding hillsides, hidden to surprise and flank the Roman army and surround it.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Roman consul reached the shores of the lake as the sun was setting and was forced to camp and wait until the next day to resume the pursuit, unaware that the enemy camp was nearby, separated only by the low hills of Cortona extending towards the lake.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The following day, Hannibal’s troops were already prepared for the ambush when the Romans, at dawn, began to leave their camp. After passing through a narrow passage between a rocky spur and the waters of the lake, they entered the fog-covered valley, unaware of the impending danger, having not sent scouts ahead.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Carthaginian army achieved a complete victory on the field, having caught most of the Roman troops still in marching order at the bottom of the valley.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Around this, four episodes of war: the army on the march, the landing of the fleet, a battle scene, and the clemency of the general. The famous clash between Hannibal’s troops and the Roman army led by Consul Gaius Flaminius took place near what is now Tuoro sul Trasimeno in 217 BC. Surprised, the Roman army was overwhelmed, and about 15,000 soldiers lost their lives in the battle.<\/strong><\/p>\n
